Basics of Texas Holdem Betting
When a lot of people begin playing poker, the one thing they really seem to
have trouble with is the betting structure. It is not like other casino
games where there is one round of betting at the beginning of play and
that's it. Betting is continuous in all forms of poker, not just Texas Holdem poker. The betting structure carries directly over to
Omaha Hi, and is very similar in Stud and draw poker. Let's examine betting
in two different categories.
Pre Flop Betting
This is the first round of betting. The player to the left of the dealer
puts in a small blind, and the player to the left of him puts in the big
blind. These players have to put these forced bets in, if they want to be
dealt cards. The blinds are set by the table limit. For example, if you are
playing at $5/$10 No Limit table, the small blind will be $5 and the big
blind will be $10.
After the blinds are paid, the dealer deals the cards. Action starts with
the player directly to the left of the big blind. As the betting goes around
the table, each player has a chance to fold (forfeit your hand), call (place
a bet the same size as the big blind) or raise (place a bet higher than the
big blind). For the next round to begin, every player who wants to continue
in the hand has to have put in the same bet size.
Post Flop Betting
These are the three rounds that take place after the first three community
cards have been dealt, after the turn has been dealt, and after the river
has been dealt. This time, the betting starts with the player directly to
the left of the dealer. Players can check (put in no money and let the next
player act), call (call the amount of a previous bet), raise (make a higher
bet amount) or fold (forfeit their hand). After the final community card has
been dealt and all the betting has been completed, the showdown occurs, and
the highest valued hand takes the jackpot.
This is a simple way of looking at the issue. If you want more information
on this subject, head over to your favorite poker blog, an online poker
school, a poker news website, or even a poker room online like
Littlewoods poker.
